NEC wins "Progress in Commercial Deployment" Femto Forum Femtocell Awards

*** For immediate use 25 June, 2009

London, 25 June 2009 : NEC Corporation, the world leader in Femtocell technology, has won the "Progress in Commercial Deployment" category of the Femto Forum Femtocell Awards. The Femto Forum Femtocell Awards are one of the industry's most prestigious and respected events, recognising the rapid evolution of the femtocell industry and outstanding achievement. The winners were announced at the awards ceremony on 24 June 2009.

Simon Saunders, Chairman of the Femto Forum said: "The judges were extremely impressed by the high quality and number of award submissions. In light of this the judging process was extremely difficult but NEC stood out and was deserving of its award."

"The femtocell industry is rapidly evolving as major advances are made in the technology, standards, services and applications - these awards recognise and reward this progress. Our congratulations to NEC and to all those who participated."

Anil Kohli, head of femtocell, NEC Europe said: "We're delighted to have won this prestigious award. It underlines our achievements in taking femtocell beyond the hype into real commercial deployments."

Mr Kohli continued: "NEC has been at the forefront of making femtocell networks a reality for some time now, with many operators having passed the trial phase. We are now seeing commercial deployment in enterprise and residential markets. By autumn 2009 we will see femtocells entering homes and businesses as part of an operator's core offering. NEC is one of the first equipment vendors to offer a complete solution which includes the Femtocell access point for direct subscriber use, together with the Femtocell gateway and the Femtocell access point management and provisioning systems. NEC is committed to the future standardization of Femtocell technology in order to drive mass-market adoption. NEC provides a range of standalone and integrated Femtocell Access Points as part of its offering to operators."

As a pioneer in the field, NEC was involved in Femtocell development from an early stage and is an active board member of the Femto Forum (www.femtoforum.org), an independent association established in July 2007. NEC views the winning of this award as recognition of its continued progress, innovation and quality that is delivered by NEC products and services.

The judging panel consisted of Professor William Web, Ofcom, Dean Bubley, Distruptive Analysis, Peter Jarich, Current Analysis, Phil Marhsall, Yankee Group, Mike Roberts, Informa Telecoms and Media, Michelle Donegan, Unstrung, Caroline Gabriel, Rethink Wireless, Aditja Kaul, ABI, Sam Sarma, CDMA development group, Adrian Scrase, 3GPP.
