PSS reaches Development Agreement with Abbott

Matsudo, Japan, March 26, 2012 - Precision System Science, Co., Ltd (PSS), Precision System Science, USA, Inc. and Ibis Biosciences, Inc., a subsidiary of Abbott, reached an agreement for PSS to develop and manufacture a front-end sample preparation instrument for Abbott’s PLEX-ID™ automated microbial identification system.

The new instrument will be designed to be a stand-alone, integrated system for automating the sample-preparation process, including aliquoting and purifying samples, for performing PLEX-ID tests faster and more efficiently.

Currently intended for non-diagnostic use, PLEX-ID is the only high-throughput technology that offers rapid and broad identification of bacteria, viruses, fungi, certain parasites, and also provides information on drug resistance, virulence, and strain type. The system employs a combination of molecular technologies, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for gene amplification and mass spectrometry analysis to rapidly characterize known and unknown organisms.

PSS’s focus is to further develop automated instruments in various areas to expand genetic analysis and in vitro diagnostics.
