President Kato: “Let’s strive to maintain the international respect that Sumitomo Corporation has worked hard to earn.”
A new employee receives his letter of appointment. It is both a moment of hope and uncertainty for new employees, because they don’t know which departments they have been assigned to until the letter is presented.
Sumitomo Corporation's fiscal 2012 welcoming ceremony for new staff was held at the Company's head office on Monday, April 2, 2012. A total of 186 new employees (135 career-track personnel and 51 clerical personnel) eagerly listened to the President's speech and solemnly received their letters of appointment one by one.
Susumu Kato, President and CEO, referred to the fact that a year had passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake, saying, "It may be difficult to truly understand the pain and suffering the victims have gone through. However, we can support them by sympathizing with the many hardships they have faced, sharing our sympathy with them and taking action to help those in need. I strongly believe that this approach will lead to true and meaningful support for the victims and affected areas. I hope that Sumitomo Corporation never forgets to consider the victims' perspectives and continues to provide long-term support to what is truly needed for the afflicted areas."
In addition, based on the current situation of expanding globalization, President Kao encouraged the new employees, saying, "Our future is faced with unprecedented global competition. I hope that you strive to work humbly and vigorously toward acquiring not only linguistic skills but a deep mutual understanding as well. Through these efforts, you will become human resources who can perform the role of international leaders as you work with business partners from around the world."
New employees will begin working in their departments in the middle of April after receiving orientation training. Under the tutoring system, which has been in use since the Company's founding, new employees will gain on-the-job experience while utilizing various types of training systems.
President Kao went on to say, "I hope that you will continue to learn of your own accord with an ambitious spirit. I also hope that you will always consider the other person's viewpoint with due consideration for their feelings. This is because developing comprehensive abilities as a human being will naturally lead to improving the ability to create business, that is, business sense."
