Tokyo, Japan, June 22, 2012 ---Teijin Limited announced that it has agreed to provide research funding to Purdue University's College of Science in support of research and development under the direction of Ei-ichi Negishi, a Teijin alumnus, Distinguished Professor at Purdue University and 2010 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. Under the agreement, Professor Negishi provides direct instruction to junior researchers from Teijin as director of the Negishi-Brown Institute.
Professor Negishi, a Teijin Group Distinguished Fellow since November 2010, has been providing Teijin with broad-ranging advice regarding the company's R&D and technological development programs from a long-term perspective. Teijin formed the fellowship program to enhance its group R&D capabilities through objective evaluation and consultation by outside experts possessing world-class R&D experience and knowledge.
As Teijin Director of the Negishi-Brown Institute, Professor Negishi will further enhance Teijin's R&D capabilities and training by directly instructing junior researchers dispatched by Teijin to attend his research courses at Purdue University.
Professor Negishi will carry the title of Teijin Director of the Negishi-Brown Institute at Purdue University for a term of five years. During this time, junior researchers from Teijin will collaborate on research projects in line with research themes that are determined through discussions between Professor Negishi, Purdue University and specialists at Teijin. The first two junior researchers already began working on a project to study organic synthesis using D-block transition metal catalysts, an area considered to be conducive to enhancing research skills as well as obtaining practical results.
Professor Negishi said, "Synthetic chemistry is a field in which Japan is strong. I hope that my new role as Teijin Director of the Negishi-Brown Institute gives junior researchers from Japan the impetus to work proactively overseas and thereby enhance Japan's R&D capabilities."
