    A large-scale municipal wastewater treatment facility in Paju, Gyeonggi-do, Korea, has started operation using a Microza™ hollow-fiber membrane bioreactor (MBR) system from Asahi Kasei Chemicals.

    MBR systems use microorganisms to break down organic substances in wastewater, and then filter the water through membranes for clarification. Compared to conventional aerated sludge systems, MBR systems feature a smaller space requirement by eliminating the need for a settling tank, higher effluent water quality by membrane filtration, and simpler maintenance by eliminating the risk of carryover of solids into the effluent.

    As the Korean government continues to tighten wastewater regulations, MBR systems are expected to be increasingly in demand as an effective and efficient solution for maintaining high water quality standards. It is also anticipated that, as the newly started facility is a municipal installation, it will be influential in spurring more widespread adoption of MBR systems in Korea.

    Asahi Kasei Chemicals currently holds a share of some 25% of the market for water filtration membranes in Korea. The company’s rich experience and superior technology were major factors in its selection for the municipal wastewater treatment facility in Paju, which is the largest-scale project to adopt Microza™ in Korea so far.

    Asahi Kasei Chemicals will continue to pursue growth in orders of Microza™ for water-treatment facilities throughout the world to further reinforce its global-leading position in the field.

    Location: Paju, Gyeonggi-do, Korea
    Use: Wastewater treatment
    Capacity: 90,000 m3/day (1st phase: 45,000 m3/day, 2nd phase: 45,000 m3/day)
    Contractor: GS Engineering & Construction Corp., and Silver Star Engineering Co., Ltd.
    Start-up: June 2012 (1st phase), August 2013 (2nd phase schedule)
